Database Management Software
Database management software is a program which stores information and allows a user to search, retrieve, sort, revise, and analyze the data1 so that it can be used for whatever purpose the user may desire. There are several different software programs which allow you to create and use a database and they can generally be placed into two different categories.
Desktop Databases Desktop database programs are simple solutions that require a small amount of knowledge (in comparison to Server Databases) and are easy to use. They are designed to run on personal computers and are generally inexpensive, user-friendly, and even offer the ability to publish the database online.2 Perhaps the most popular desktop database software is Microsoft Access. Most desktop databases are quite inexpensive and can easily be obtained by single users. For instance, if you have Microsoft Office then chances are that you already have Microsoft Access.

Server databases are larger scale programs which manage large amounts of data and allows multiple users to utilize the all the data at once. Most often, server databases are used by large businesses which have many users adding, updating, and deleting the data at the same time. These programs are high performance, flexible, and highly scalable. Generally, the software runs on servers which have multiple high speed processors, high bandwidth connectivity, and a very large amount of storage space which is backed up. Because the software is designed for more advanced users, the software can be programmed to accommodate custom databases.2 However, server databases are generally very expensive so they aren’t used for smaller applications.
