Cognos Incorporated was originally found in Canada in 1969. They built a name for themselves as a business intelligence and performance management company. It was adopted by Quasar Systems Limited in 1982. In 2008 Cognos was acquired by IBM. IBM acquired Cognos and other business intelligence software companies in an effort to become the leading vendor for Business Intelligence and Performance Management software. Cognos is a powerful tool used in conjunction with database that combines several features together into one package. IBM has strived to design Cognos as a tool that can be used by users who don’t have the highest level of technical tools and still be effective. At the same time it is also designed for highly technical users because it is loaded with many powerful features. Some of the more common tools include: Report Studio, Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Framework manager.

The SoftwareEdit

Cognos 8 BI was initially released in September of 2005. This software combines many previous industry leading software’s into one package. The following is a list and description of the tools included:

  • Query Studio (Ad hoc reporting tool with instant data preview)
  • Analysis Studio (Used with multi-dimensional cubes to instantly view data to answer business related questions quickly)
  • Report Studio (Powerful reporting too used to build complex reports with an array of different charts and graphs)
  • Metric Studio (Monitor, analyze, and report on KPIs)
  • Metric Designer (Define, load, and maintain metrics to be available in Metric Studio)
  • Event Studio (Scheduler and Event notifier to notify decision makers that events have occurred such as a report run being finished)
  • Framework Manager (Metadata layer tool that which defines packages and models)
  • PowerPlay Studio (Used to create and view reports that are based on multidimensional data sources)

The FutureEdit

Cognos 10 is the next release in IBM’s BI software line. It is supposed to be released in Q4 of 2010. Cognos 10 is said to possess many of the same features as Cognos 8 but with much more functionality and new features to make it even more user friendly and powerful.
